An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) documents the environmental performance of constructions products and is being developed according to European and international standards.

In other words, an EPD is a standardized method to communicate information on energy- and resourceconsumption and the environmental impacts arising from the production, use and disposal of construction products.

What is ECO Platform?

Common European guidelines for quality and content of EPD's
ECO Platform

EPD Danmark is a member of ECO Platform - a European organisation which will ensure a consistent level of quality and content of the EPD's that are developed in Europe, thus ensuring mutual recognition across regional borders.

The work in ECO Platform are divided into three Working Groups, and is coordinated with the standardizationwork in CEN/TC 350.

How is an EPD made?

Datacollection -> modelleing and reporting -> verification -> EPD!

The main content of an EPD comes from the life cycle assessment (LCA), which is developed using production specific data collected at the production site.

An LCA calculation software based on extensive databases are typically used for modelling the product system and calculation of the LCA results. On the basis of the LCA, the EPD is developed and then verified together with the background report, before being published.

Must an EPD be verified?

An EPD is not an EPD if not verified!

An EPD is not valid if it has not been verified in accordance with the requirements in ISO 14025.

Through the ECO Platform membership, EPD Danmark are committet to using competent and independent verifiers for all published EPD's.

Description of the verification procedure and the requirements to the competence and independency of the verifiers are found in the general programme instructions, which can be read here.
